MELT is a loose series of drawings created during a one-week international artists’ symposium at San Miniato. In the classical format of the medium-size drawing—without any installational integration, without explicitly addressing the question of the frame, and also without a systematic unifying element comparable to the scaffold-cages of BOXED—the works rehearse the technical possibilities of charcoal drawing, blending the positive-negative inversion produced by removing charcoal dust (using an eraser or a vacuum cleaner), frottage, linear drawing, the sfumato generated by wiping, etc. The drawings accentuate this technical heterogeneity, for instance with sharply drawn lines to outline the graphemes produced by other techniques. The drawing is thus conceived as a multidimensional process in which varying motifs are deformed, crossbred, and dissolved not by the imagination but by the vectors and resistances of the material and technique of representation. The title MELT points to this process of smelting, of overheating and liquefaction, to which the motifs are subjected by the very process that engenders them.
