Pamphile Show, A Pictoria Novel in Pieces
curated by Gunter Reski and Marcus Weber
Jet, Berlin, DE
All artists participating in the Pamphile Show curated by Gunter Reski and Marcus Weber take up a scene from Alexandre Dumas’ satirical novel Captain Pamphile (1840). The charcoal drawing makes reference to a sequence set among slave traders. The slaves, who have been bartered for ivory, are being stacked in the ship’s belly. The captain’s wish to enslave the traders as well and store them onboard is thwarted by a lack of room: even with the best stacking technique, no more bodies will fit into the ship.
The exhibition was shown at JET, Berlin, in 2009. In 2010/11, the works will be on view in different constellations at the municipal gallery of Waldkraiburg and at the Falckenberg collection, Hamburg.
